Active
Jack Russells are incredibly active dogs, and therefore they’ll need regular exercise and plenty of space to play. A large garden is definitely the preferred option – they’re certainly not apartment dogs. They don’t tend to sit curled up for too long and enjoy interaction and activity, and will love being taken for long walks. But, you could well have to keep them on the lead if you haven’t trained them – because they’re so active they can be known to run for miles, so it’s important to keep them in check.
Born hunters

Vocal
One of the most important things to remember about the Jack Russell terrier personality is that this breed is prone to barking. Again it probably hails from the days they were used as hunters, and is something that can’t easily be trained out – nor should it be. Crave attention
They’re incredibly social creatures and always like to be at the centre of attention. They hate sitting in the corner by themselves but love to interact, making them hugely entertaining and enjoyable to watch. They’ll make their own entertainment if they have to – this often includes digging “phantom” holes (again from their hunting days) and chasing anything that moves.
Intelligent
A major advantage of the Jack Russell terrier personality is their intelligence. They learn fast and thrive on routine, but they’re also very strong willed and stubborn making training a challenge. They respond well to short spells of obedience training (as long as it’s accompanied with rewards), with an emphasis on short – they get bored easily – but if given the time and patience they pick things up very quickly.
